I found this online today. It is the idea that there are only 26 letters in the English language but we have 45 different symbols to represent those letters. Our conventional alphabet contains 19 letters having dissimilar upper and lower case symbols (such as ‘A’ and ‘a’) and 7 letters (c-o-s-v-w-x-z) having symbols that are identical. So Bradbury Thompson came up with a radical idea in 1950s call “Alphabet 26″. With Alphabet 26, he proposed a plan based upon the logic of consistency, proposed that of the 19 letters that have dissimilar symbols 15 letters should use the uppercase designs [black letters below] and 4 letters should use the lowercase designs [green letters]. The other 7 letters already have identical symbols [blue letters].

I find this to be a very interesting concept, specially as I see Audrey (my young daughter) start to learn to read and she sometimes struggles with the different letters. Although I do see some fault in it because we often read words by their shape, not just the letters. So if we were to accept this system of writing it would cause everything to look like it was written in ALL CAPS and we would lose the shape of words making it harder to read words.

So, what I would like to know is why were some letters chosen to be upper case, and others lower? Just random? He liked the way two-story letter a’s looked?

Who doesn’t like the way the two story “a”! Yeah I had the same question from someone at work, and I was never able to find an answer. I believe he was getting ready to write a book about this idea but died before he finished, if I understand correctly.

I think he was just add an “amen” to his new idea
